What types of cover does a breakdown policy offer?

Most policies may provide at least some of the following sections, if not all.

Roadside Assistance: This is the main cover of any breakdown insurance policy. It provides the driver with help if their car, van or motorcycle breaks down when away from their home (normally there will be a minimum distance that you have to be away from your home in order to qualify for assistance). When the driver calls for assistance the breakdown company will send someone out to provide assistance.

Home Start: Provides assistance when the driver’s car breaks down at or near their home. Basically, removing the minimum distance away from home clause from the policy.

National Recovery: As well as call-out and roadside repair, this type of cover includes a tow to any location in the UK. It might be worth considering if you often drive far from home. 

Onward travel: If travel plans are interrupted due to a vehicle breakdown, this feature covers the cost of alternative travel arrangements. Some policies may also cover accommodation if the breakdown happens far away from home.

European Cover: Extends the breakdown coverage to European countries otherwise it is just limited to the United Kingdom.

Car hire: Provides a replacement car while your vehicle is being repaired

How does it work?

Using your breakdown insurance is simple. Keep your policy information in your vehicle or on your phone. When you contact your breakdown cover provider, they’ll take details of where you are and what the problem is, then send out a mechanic.

Depending on the nature of the problem and your level of cover, the mechanic will either fix the issue there and then, or tow you and your vehicle to a nearby garage.
